About Marcapa Black Ginger

Marcapa Black Ginger is two botanicals. A serving delivers 1,000 mg — 700 mg of Thai black ginger powdered root and 300 mg of cordyceps fruiting body.

Black ginger, Kaempferia parviflora, is a rhizome from northern Thailand, where it goes by krachai dam. Its activity sits in a family of compounds called methoxyflavones, and their content swings widely between growing regions and chemotypes. Which means the milligram figure on the front of a bottle tells you less than you would hope.

So we had ours assayed. MS Bioanalytical, an independent laboratory in Champaign, Illinois, ran it by HPLC-UV and found 11.8 mg of 5,7-dimethoxyflavone per gram. That is 8.3 mg in a serving.

Two limits on that number. It covers 5,7-dimethoxyflavone alone, so the full methoxyflavone total sits higher by an amount we have not yet measured. And it comes from one production lot. We are extending the assay on both counts.

There is no caffeine in it and it is not a stimulant. It works on consistency — take it daily and give it a full twelve weeks.

Vortex freeze dried, in HPMC vegetarian capsules, at a GMP-certified facility audited by SGS to the Thai Ministry of Public Health standard. 60 capsules — a 30-day supply at two a day.

Ingredient Breakdown

Black Ginger (Kaempferia parviflora), Powdered Root

Black Ginger (Kaempferia parviflora), Powdered Root

700 mg per serving (350 mg per capsule, 70% of the blend)

A rhizome native to northern Thailand, where it is known as krachai dam. Dark purple in cross-section, and unrelated to the culinary ginger it is named after.

Its characteristic compounds are polymethoxyflavones, the family that also gives the rhizome its colour. Because their content varies widely between growing regions and chemotypes, the milligram figure on a bottle tells you less than the assay does.

So we had ours measured. MS Bioanalytical, an independent laboratory in Champaign, Illinois, assayed this material by HPLC-UV at 11.8 mg of 5,7-dimethoxyflavone per gram — 8.3 mg in a 700 mg serving. Two caveats worth stating: the assay covers 5,7-dimethoxyflavone only rather than the full methoxyflavone panel, so the total is higher by an amount we have not yet measured, and it was run on one production lot rather than every batch.

Cordyceps militaris, Powdered Fruiting Body

Cordyceps militaris, Powdered Fruiting Body

300 mg per serving (150 mg per capsule, 30% of the blend)

Cordyceps militaris, declared as fruiting body rather than mycelium grown on grain.

Both halves of that matter. Much of the material sold simply as "cordyceps" is Cordyceps sinensis rather than militaris, and much of it is mycelium cultivated on sterilised grain and milled together with the substrate, where the grain can end up the majority of the powder by weight. Species and plant part are the two things a label should tell you, and most do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an extract or whole root?
Whole root. Each 2-capsule serving provides 700 mg of freeze-dried, powdered Kaempferia parviflora root, not a standardised extract. Extracts concentrate selected compounds, so milligram figures are not directly comparable between an extract and a whole root powder. That is why we had ours assayed.
How much 5,7-dimethoxyflavone does a serving contain?
8.3 mg. An independent US laboratory, MS Bioanalytical, measured our black ginger by HPLC-UV at 11.8 mg of 5,7-dimethoxyflavone per gram — 8.3 mg in a 700 mg serving. For comparison, a 100 mg extract standardised to 5% 5,7-DMF delivers 5 mg. The assay covers 5,7-DMF only, so total methoxyflavones are higher, and it was run on one production lot.
How long until I see results?
Give it a few weeks. Black ginger is not a stimulant, so there is no immediate hit to feel — it builds with consistent use. Plan on a full 12 weeks, which is why the 3-month plan is the one most people should start on.
Is this safe to take daily?
It is made for daily use. The label directs 2 capsules daily, and each bottle is a 30-day supply. Do not use it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, and keep it out of reach of children. If you take prescription medication, speak to your healthcare provider before starting.
Can I take this with other supplements or medications?
Talk to your healthcare provider first, and especially if you take prescription medication.
How many capsules are in a bottle?
Each bottle contains 60 capsules — a 30-day supply when taken as directed, at 2 capsules daily.
