About JoyBoon Jiaogulan (Gynostemma pentaphyllum)

JoyBoon Jiaogulan is one ingredient: whole leaf of Gynostemma pentaphyllum, freeze-dried and encapsulated. A 2-capsule serving provides 660 mg of powdered leaf.

It is a climbing vine with five-lobed leaflets, native across South and East Asia. In southern China, Thailand and Vietnam people drink the leaf as an everyday tea — an afternoon habit, much the way other places drink green tea.

You will see it sold as southern ginseng. The nickname is wrong. Jiaogulan sits in the Cucurbitaceae, the cucumber and gourd family; ginseng sits in the Araliaceae. What the two share is a class of compounds — jiaogulan's gypenosides are dammarane-type saponins, and a handful of the two hundred-odd identified so far also turn up in ginseng. That is the whole of the overlap.

This is whole leaf, not a standardised extract, and we have not put a gypenoside percentage on it. If a marker figure is what you need, buy a product that states one.

The leaf is freeze-dried at low temperature, then milled and encapsulated. Drying cold splits the tissue along its cell walls and leaves a porous particle, which holds on to what heat would take. The same process runs across the range.

It is often called southern ginseng, and that nickname is misleading enough to correct: jiaogulan belongs to the Cucurbitaceae, the cucumber and gourd family, while ginseng belongs to the Araliaceae. They are not related. What they do share is a class of compounds — jiaogulan contains dammarane-type saponins called gypenosides, and a handful of the two hundred-plus identified are also found in ginseng.
